Abbans-Dessus is a French municipality with 304 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Abbans-Dessus is located at 414 m, two kilometers north of Quingey and about 17 km southwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends on the western edge of the Jura , in a panoramic position on a promontory of the ridge between the valleys of Doubs and Loue .
The area of the 4.43 km² municipality covers a section of the western French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the ridge, which belongs to the extreme foothills of the Jura and extends in a south-west-north-east direction between the valleys of Doubs in the north and Loue in the south. At 470 m, the highest point of Abbans-Dessus is reached on the hill southeast of the village. To the northeast, the municipal area extends to the forest height of Montgardot ( 456 m ), to the southwest to the Côte de Moini . The area is drained north to the Doubs.
The neighboring communities of Abbans-Dessus are Abbans-Dessous and Boussières in the north, Quingey in the east and south and Byans-sur-Doubs in the west.
history
Since the 11th century Abbans-Dessus was the center of a rule that for a long time belonged to the Jouffroy family. Together with Franche-Comté, the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
The village church of Abbans-Dessus was built in the 18th century. The castle , which was first mentioned in a document in 1092, shows components from different eras. One of the oldest parts is the square Romanesque keep (12th century); two other towers date from the 14th century, while the residential buildings were renewed and redesigned in the 18th century. Various houses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the old town center.

With 304 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Abbans-Dessus is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (199 people were still counted in 1891), population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Abbans-Dessus was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) well into the 20th century. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Boussières to Quingey. There are other road links with Abbans-Dessous and Byans-sur-Doubs.
