Mairie Montivernage

Montivernage is a French municipality with 28 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Montivernage is located at 480  m , six kilometers southeast of Baume-les-Dames and about 31 kilometers east-northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , almost 200 m above the valley floor of the Cusancin on the northern edge of a high plateau.

The area of the 3.34 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by the plateau, which extends between the valley of the Cusancin and the ridge of the Grand Bois, averages 480 m and is slightly undulating. It is mostly made up of arable and meadow land, but also shows some forest areas. The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. To the south of the village is the cave Grotte des Orcières . At 541 m, the highest point in Montivernage is reached on a knoll on the high plateau. The northern border runs along the steep slope that slopes down to the Cusancin and is marked in various places by rocky outcrops.

Neighboring municipalities of Montivernage are Cusance in the north, Lanans in the east, Vaudrivillers and Passavant in the south and Guillon-les-Bains in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Montivernage belonged to the Cusance domain. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

With 28 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Montivernage is one of the smallest communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (101 people were still counted in 1906), only slight fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1990s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Montivernage was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are very few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from Guillon-les-Bains in the Cusancin Valley. There are other road connections with Passavant and Lanans.
