Lavoir in Rurey

Rurey is a French municipality with 340 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Rurey is located at 390  m , about 16 kilometers south of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in a basin that opens west to the Loue valley, at the foot of the Mont d'Or.

The area of the 14.77 km² municipality covers a section of the stratified landscape of the western French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the Rurey basin. This is flanked in the north by the Zeugenberg Mont d'Or ( 511  m ), in the east and south by the wooded plateau Sur le Mouret (at 520 m the highest elevation in Rurey). The Loue flows around this high plateau in a winding course, whereby the valley is usually cut approximately 80 to 100 m deep into the surrounding plateaus and has a flat valley floor with a maximum width of 500 m. The steep valley slopes are criss-crossed by limestone walls in some places. The southern and western municipal boundaries run along the river. To the north, the community area extends to the plateau, which is partly covered with meadow, partly with forest ( Bois Marquis ) and averages 420 m.

Neighboring municipalities of Rurey are Chenecey-Buillon and Épeugney in the north, Cademène in the east, Amondans and Lizine in the south and Châtillon-sur-Lison , Rouhe and Courcelles in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Rurey belonged to the lordship of Montrond-le-Château . Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

With 340 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Rurey is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (444 people were still counted in 1881), there has been significant population growth again since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Rurey was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now a few small and medium-sized businesses, including a company specializing in the manufacture of signs. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Épeugney to Quingey .
