Ornans is a French municipality with 4413 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It belongs to the arrondissement of Besançon and is the capital of the canton of Ornans of the same name .
It was created with effect from January 1, 2016 as the Commune nouvelle of the same name through the amalgamation of the formerly independent municipalities Ornans and Bonnevaux-le-Prieuré , which have the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative headquarters are in Ornans.

location
The municipality is located in the Loue Valley between Besançon (25 kilometers northwest) and Pontarlier (36 kilometers southeast). Ornans is the starting point for canoeing on the river. Ornans station on the L'Hôpital-du-Grosbois-Lods railway line and the line have been closed.
Attractions
Besides the church from 1548, the ruins of the castle from the 13th century with the Saint-Georges chapel from the 16th century are worth mentioning. The house where the painter Gustave Courbet was born is now the Musée Courbet , and another museum is dedicated to fishing. The old town on the Loue with aristocratic and town houses from the 15th to 18th centuries and the Grand Pont bridge are also worth seeing.
