Mairie Pessans |
Pessans is a French commune with a population of 87 (as at 1st January 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Pessans is located at 320 m, south of Quingey , about 22 kilometers southwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the western Jura , on a plateau-like hill east of the Loue in the valley widening between the heights of the Côte de Moini in the west and the Bois du Landet in the east.
The area of the 4.35 km² large municipality covers a section of the western French Jura. The area is limited to the west by the Loue. It flows here in a winding course to the south through a wide basin, which is framed by the extreme ridges of the Jura. From the course of the river, the community area extends eastward over the flat floodplain and the adjoining undulating hill foot zone, which is partly made up of meadow and partly of forest ( Bois de Buhin and Bois de la Chênaie ). In the far east, the area stretches up the wooded ridge of the Bois du Landet , which is part of a Jura chain that stretches north from Mont Poupet to the loop of the Loue river. Here, at 555 m, the highest elevation of Pessans is reached.
Neighboring communities of Pessans are
- Lavans-Quingey in the north,
- Goux-sous-Landet in the east,
- Le Val with Pointvillers and Montfort in the south,
- Brères and Lombard to the west.
history
Since the Middle Ages, Pessans belonged to the lordship and castellanry of Quingey. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
Various farmhouses in the characteristic style of Franche-Comté from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the town center.

With 87 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Pessans is one of the smallest communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (100 people were still counted in 1901), slight population growth has been recorded again since the mid-1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Pessans was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the RN 83 , which leads from Besançon to Lons-le-Saunier . Another road connection exists with Pointvillers.
