Fertans is a French municipality with 256 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Fertans is located at 539  m above sea level, about nine kilometers southwest of Ornans and 20 kilometers south of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in a hollow on the Amancey plateau, which extends between the valleys of Loue and Lison , in the headwaters of the Mée stream.

The area of the 8.19 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the Amancey plateau, which lies at an average of 550 m and is partly made up of meadows and partly of forest. Towards the south the plateau rises slightly, so that north of Amancey the highest point of Fertans is reached at 583 m. The plateau ends in numerous sub-plateaus to the north, which are separated from each other by deeply cut erosion valleys. The Mée rises near Fertans and deepens quickly and later flows into the Ruisseau de Noirvaux . The eastern border runs along the Ruisseau de Noirvaux (tributary of the Loue), the valley of which is cut almost 200 m deep into the plateau, and the western boundary is above the steep drop to the valley of the Ruisseau de Malans . All the steep slopes of these erosion valleys are crowned on the upper edge by striking limestone walls.

Neighboring communities of Fertans are Amondans and Cléron in the north, Flagey in the east, Amancey in the south and Malans in the west.

history

Saint-Léger church

Various finds indicate that the municipality of Fertans was already populated in the Iron Age. Fertans is first mentioned in a document in the 12th century. It has formed a parish since then. In the Middle Ages Fertans was the center of a small rule that was under the sovereignty of the Lords of Scey. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. It was not until 1790 that Fertans lost its primacy on the Amancey plateau to Amancey. In 1972 Fertans was merged with Amondans, Cléron and Malans to form the large municipality of Amancey, but was given back its independence in 1980. Since 1993 Fertans has been a member of the Communauté de communes Amancey-Loue-Lison, which comprises 19 villages .

Attractions

The parish church of Saint-Léger in Fertans originally dates back to the 12th century, but has been restored and redesigned several times over the centuries. The tower dates from the 14th century and the choir from the 18th century. The church is richly decorated , including groups of statues from the 16th century, tombstones and a pulpit from the 18th century.

The castle was built in the 13th century, partially destroyed in 1638 and then rebuilt in its current form with two towers.

In the old town center, numerous farmhouses in the characteristic style of the Haut-Doubs from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved.

With 256 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Fertans is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (305 people were still counted in 1891), the population has continued to grow steadily since the beginning of the 1990s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Fertans was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some small and medium-sized businesses, including a sawmill and another wood processing company. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on the D473 departmental road, which leads from Besançon to Levier . Another road connection is with Amondans.
