The Peene-Südkanal is a 27 km long irrigation canal in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It was laid out between 1977 and 1981 to supply areas south of the Peene , in particular the Friedländer Große Wiese , with water from the river if required . In the municipality of Stolpe , the water is raised from sea level to 12 m above sea level by the Dersewitz pumping station (in the district of the same name) and fed into the canal. At the “ Kavelpass ” weir in front of Friedland , it reaches the eastern part of the ditch , 7.9 m above sea level . The water of the canal was used intensively by the neighboring farms ( LPG ) to irrigate the fields.

To counteract soil erosion on the plateau between the Peene and Landgraben, a windbreak strip on both sides was planted along the canal. The reason for this was also the field clearing for the large-scale agriculture of the GDR at the beginning of the 1970s, in which many field hedges and other strips of wood were removed.

The south channel is dimensioned with a bed width of 8 meters and a water depth of 2.2 meters for a discharge of 11.7 m³ / s. Crossing waters pass under the canal in culverts . At the crossing points, water can be transferred from the canal. The Dersewitz pumping station was originally equipped with 7 pumps that could lift 1.95 m³ / s each 11.6 meters.

The construction of the Peene South Canal was one of the largest irrigation projects in the GDR . 65.1 million marks were invested, of which 33.9 million marks went to the canal and 14.0 million marks to the pumping station. After the end of the GDR, water abstraction from the Peene decreased significantly for financial reasons. The Dersewitz pumping station was automated; its output was reduced to 4 pumps at 0.5 m³ / s each. The water level in the canal is kept at a minimum water level of 1 meter to prevent destruction of the clay seal.
