Romain , even Romain-la-Roche called, is a French municipality with 128 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Romain is located at 352 m , ten kilometers north of Baume-les-Dames and about 35 kilometers northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the undulating landscape between the river valleys of Doubs in the south and Ognon in the north, on a slope sloping to the west above the valley basin of the Crenu at the foot of the high plateau of the Bois du Valbertuy.
The area of the 4.85 km² municipal area covers a section of the undulating landscape between the Doubs and Ognon. The western part of the area is taken up by the valley basin of the Crenu (tributary of the Ognon), which averages 310 m. It is mainly made up of arable and meadow land. To the east, an approximately 100 m high step leads over to an arid, karstified high plateau, which lies at about 430 m and is mainly covered by forest ( Bois du Valbertuy ). At 458 m, Romain's highest point is reached here. The different karst phenomena include several caves (including the Grotte du Crotot) and sinkholes.
Neighboring municipalities of Romain are Gouhelans and Gondenans-les-Moulins in the north, Fontenelle-Montby in the east, Mésandans in the south and Huanne-Montmartin in the west.
history
Romain was first mentioned in a document in 1134. Since that time it has been a parish. In the Middle Ages, the village first belonged to the rule of Granges, which had been under the sovereignty of the Counts of Württemberg-Mömpelgard (Montbéliard) since the 14th century , and from the 16th century to the dominions of Soye and Goudenans-les-Moulins. Together with Franche-Comté , Romain finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. From 1680 the new village was built, which was a little further down the slope and no longer directly under the rocks. In 1922 the municipality was temporarily officially called Romain-la-Roche. Today Romain is part of the community association Deux Vallées Vertes .
Attractions
The Saint-Jean-l'Evangéliste church was rebuilt in the classic style from 1762 to 1774. There is a chapel a little above the village. In the center there are numerous houses in the characteristic style of Franche-Comté from the 17th to 19th centuries.
population
With 128 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Romain is one of the smallest municipalities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (261 people were counted in 1891), population growth has been recorded again since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Romain was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located below the main road D50, which leads from Baume-les-Dames to Villersexel . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around seven kilometers away. Other road links exist with Gouhelans and Fontenelle-Montby.
