geography

Fourbanne is located at 264  m , five kilometers west-southwest of Baume-les-Dames and about 23 kilometers east-northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Doubstal on the right north side of the river, in the extreme northwestern mountain ranges of the Jura , at the northern foot of the Côte (Jura border chain).

The area of the 1.97 km² large municipal area includes a section of the Doubstal. The Doubs flows here with several turns through a mostly 500 m wide flat floodplain to the west-south-west and at the same time forms the waterway of the Rhine-Rhône Canal . The valley is deeply cut between the ridges of the Jura ridge system. It is flanked by steep slopes that reveal rock walls, caves and springs. From the course of the river, the southern border, the community area extends northward over the valley floodplain and a 50 to 80 m high steep slope, which is criss-crossed by rocks in various places, to the adjacent Grosbois plateau. The highest elevation of Fourbanne is reached here at 386 m.

Neighboring municipalities to Fourbanne are Grosbois in the north, Baume-les-Dames and Esnans in the east, Ougney-Douvot in the south and Séchin in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Fourbanne belonged to the Kastlanei Baume-les-Dames. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Economy and Infrastructure

Watermill in Fourbanne

Until well into the 20th century, Fourbanne was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). In the 19th century, the water power of the Doubs was used to operate a mill. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. The only access is from Grosbois on the main road N83, which leads from Besançon to Montbéliard. The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around ten kilometers away.
