geography

Lavoir in Rougemontot

Rougemontot is located at 263  m , nine kilometers northwest of Baume-les-Dames and about 25 kilometers northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the basin of the Ruisseau de la Beune south of the Ognon , at the northeast foot of Mont Bichoux, one of the extreme northwestern ridges of the Jura .

The area of the 4.25 km² municipal area covers a section of the undulating landscape between the river valleys of Doubs and Ognon. The northern part of the area is occupied by the valley of the Ruisseau de la Beune, which provides drainage to the northwest to the Ognon. The valley is flanked by densely wooded heights: in the east by the heights of the Bois des Perrières and in the southwest by the Bois du Mont . The community area extends over this forest ridge to Mont Bichoux. The highest point of Rougemontot is reached here at 474 m.

Neighboring communes of Rougemontot are Battenans-les-Mines in the north, La Bretenière in the east, Villers-Grélot in the south and Cendrey in the west.

history

Iron ore was mined at Rougemontot early on.

population

With 95 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Rougemontot is one of the smallest communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (194 people were still counted in 1891), population growth has been recorded again since the mid-1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Rougemontot was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. The former mines are now used for mushroom cultivation. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Baume-les-Dames to Larians-et-Munans . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 14 kilometers away. Another road connection is with Battenans-les-Mines.
