Saraz is a French commune with a population of 11 (as at 1st January 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Saraz is located at 509  m above sea level, about 17 kilometers southwest of Ornans and 27 kilometers south of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , on a flat area high above the Lison valley on the northern edge of the Forêt de Fertans.

The area of the 6.02 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is taken up by the terrace of Saraz, which lies at an average of 520 m and is approximately 500 meters wide and 1.5 km long. In the east and north, the terrain drops steeply to the deeply carved erosion valley of the Lison, the slopes of which are lined in various places by striking limestone walls. To the south, the communal soil extends over the broad ridge of the Forêt de Fertans , on which the highest elevation in Saraz is reached at 610 m. In the west, the municipal area extends into extensive forest areas and into the Bois de Séchin and the rocky edge of Rocher de Guerche .

Neighboring municipalities of Saraz are Éternoz in the north and east, Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne in the south and Salins-les-Bains and Myon in the west.

history

Various remains, including a tumulus from the Iron Age , point to a prehistoric settlement in the municipality of Saraz. The village probably developed in the 11th century and at that time belonged to the territory of the Lords of Scey. In 1260 Saraz came to the Kastlanei Montmahoux . Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. After the French Revolution , Saraz came to the parish of Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne, but was merged with that of Alaise in 1807. The villagers resisted a merger with Éternoz in 1973, which is why Saraz is still an independent small community today. Today Saraz is a member of the Loue-Lison community .

With 11 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Saraz is one of the smallest communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (101 people were still counted in 1881), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Saraz was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside of the primary sector there are almost no jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne to Alaise.
