geography

Fontain is located at 430  m , about four kilometers south of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the western Jura , on a slightly elevated position on the southern slope of the Jura ridge, which connects to the south of the Doubs valley , above the so-called first plateau.

The area of the municipality covers a section of the western French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the wide first Jura plateau, which is on average 380 m. To the south of Fontain it forms a wide basin with no surface drainage because the rainwater seeps into the karst subsoil. This depression is predominantly made up of meadow and arable land, partly also of forest. In the very south, an approximately 50 m high step leads to the plateau of the Grand Bois (up to 440 m).

To the north of the plateau is the Jura ridge, an elongated ridge that is divided into two ridges in the Fontain area by the erosion valley of the Beure stream. At 508 m, the highest point of Fontain is reached north of the village. The northern border runs on the narrow ridge of Mont des Buis ( 480  m ), which in turn drops steeply to the Doubs valley.

Neighboring towns of Fontain are Beure , Besançon and Morre in the north, La Vèze in the east, Mérey-sous-Montrond and Montrond-le-Château in the south and Arguel in the west.

Attractions

The Saint-Pierre church was originally built in 1145, but was replaced by the current church between 1758 and 1770. Various farmhouses in the characteristic style of Franche-Comté from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved in the town center. The Notre-Dame des Buis chapel and the Marulaz Fort on Mont des Buis, built from 1874 to 1878, are also worth mentioning.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Fontain was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Since the 1970s, a small industrial zone has developed in which an industrial bakery and wood processing companies have settled. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, especially in Besançon.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Montfaucon south of the Jura ridge to the main road N83 (Besançon - Lons-le-Saunier). There are other road connections with Arguel and Mérey-sous-Montrond.
