Fontain is a village and a former French commune with last 1,016 inhabitants (2016) in the department of Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It belonged to the Arrondissement of Besançon and the Canton of Besançon-5 .
With effect from January 1, 2019, the former municipalities of Fontain and Arguel were merged to form the Commune nouvelle Fontain of the same name . The former municipalities were not granted the status of Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative headquarters are in Fontain.

history
The municipality of Fontain was settled very early. Iron Age tumuli are the earliest evidence . Coin and brick finds point to the Gallo-Roman period.
Fontain was first mentioned in a document in 1265 under the name Fontens . Over time, the spelling developed via Fontain (1317), Fontanis and Fontaine (1403) to the current name. Since the Middle Ages Fontain belonged to the rule Arguel, which was under the suzerainty of the House of Chalon. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (570 people were still counted in 1881), a striking population growth has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1970s.
