geography
Arguel is located at 380 m , about five kilometers southwest of the city of Besançon . The village extends in the western Jura in a valley above Beure and south of the Doube valley .
The area covers a section of the western Jura. The northern part has greater differences in relief and is taken up by the system of the Jura ridge, which runs parallel to the Doubstal. At 507 m, the highest point of Arguel is reached at the height southwest of the village. The valley of Arguel opens to the northeast to the valley of the Ruisseau des Mercureaux , which flows into the Doubs at Beure. It is separated from the Doubstal by a prominent ledge on which the medieval castle stood. To the south, the area extends over the plains of the so-called first Jura plateau, which is partly made up of meadows and arable land and partly forest, to the edge of the Grand Bois .
Arguel's neighbors are Beure in the north, Fontain in the east, Montrond-le-Château in the south and Pugey in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages Arguel formed an important rule under the sovereignty of the Free County of Burgundy. The castle was destroyed in 1674 by the troops of King Louis XIV . Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions
The village church of Saint-Hippolyte was built at the end of the 17th century, partly with stone from the destroyed medieval castle. It has remarkable wooden statues from the 15th and 16th centuries. The ruins of Arguel Castle are on the narrow rocky promontory between Arguel and the Doubstal. Fort Rolland was built in 1871 as part of the fortification system around the city of Besançon.
Economy and Infrastructure
Arguel was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) well into the 20th century. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the Besançon agglomeration.
The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Beure to Cléron . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 14 kilometers away. Another road connection exists with Fontain.
