Pugey is a French municipality with 742 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Pugey is located at 408 m , about seven kilometers southwest of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the western Jura , in a wide, south-opening valley basin in the Jura ridge, which connects to the south of the Doubs valley .
The area of the 7.32 km² municipality covers a section of the western French Jura. The northern part of the area is occupied by the Pugey valley. It is surrounded by the heights of the Jura ridge, on which Pugey's highest point is reached at 485 m. The hollow is drained to the south by a short stream that seeps into the adjacent so-called first plateau of the Jura. The community area extends south over a 50 m high step onto the predominantly wooded plateau of the Grand Bois .
In addition to the actual village, Pugey includes several hamlets and individual farms, including:
- Les Clairons ( 380 m ) on the plateau at the southern foot of the Jura ridge
- Bonnet-Rond ( 390 m ) on the ascent to the Plateau des Grand Bois
- Chalet d'Arguel ( 408 m ) on the Plateau des Grand Bois
Neighboring communities of Pugey are Beure in the north, Arguel and Montrond-le-Château in the east, Épeugney and Chenecey-Buillon in the south and Larnod in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages, Pugey belonged to the Arguel lordship. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions

The town center, which is characterized by various farmhouses in the characteristic style of Franche-Comté from the 17th to 19th centuries, is also home to the manor Château Bassand and the Mairie (parish hall) from the mid-18th century. There is a chapel in the hamlet of Chalet d'Arguel.

With 742 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Pugey is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (307 people were still counted in 1891), a marked increase in population has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Pugey was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. Since the 1970s, a small industrial zone has developed on the outskirts, in which companies from the transport and micromechanics industries have settled. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, especially in Besançon.
The village is located off the major thoroughfares on the D473 departmental road, which leads from Besançon to Levier . Further road connections exist with Quingey and Montfaucon .
