Rillans is a French commune with a population of 93 (as at 1st January 2017) in the Doubs department in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Rillans is 400 m , seven kilometers north of Baume-les-Dames and about 32 kilometers northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends on a high plateau between the river valleys of Doubs in the south and Ognon in the north, on the brook Viotte at the southern foot of Mont du Ciel.
The area of the 3.42 km² municipal area covers a section of the gently undulating landscape north of the Doubs. The main part of the area is taken up by a high plateau, which is an average of 400 m. It consists mainly of arable and meadow land, but also shows some forest areas. The only surface flowing water is the Viotte brook , which has its source at Rillans and seeps away again in the Verne area, before emerging again as a karst spring at Fourbanne in the Doubstal valley. The plateau is karstified and has several caves and shafts. Towards the north, the terrain rises slightly to the summit of Mont du Ciel , on which the highest point of Rillans is reached at 473 m. This hill separates the high plateau from the significantly lower headwaters of the Crenu, which is adjacent to the north.
Neighboring communities of Rillans are Mésandans in the north, Vergranne in the east, Verne in the south and Trouvans in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages, Rillans belonged to the domain of Clerval , which had been under the sovereignty of the Counts of Montbéliard since the 14th century. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Rillans is part of the Doubs Baumois municipal association .
Attractions
The Rillans Chapel was built in 1879. A mansion dates from the 18th century.

With 93 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Rillans is one of the smallest communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (112 people were still counted in 1886), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1960s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Rillans was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.
The village is located away from the major thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the main road D50, which leads from Baume-les-Dames to Villersexel . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around six kilometers away. Another road connection exists with Verne.
