Peggy Seeger (born June 17, 1935 in New York City ) is an American (and temporarily British) folk singer and songwriter.

Live and act

Seeger grew up in a musical family; her father was the music researcher Charles Seeger (1886–1979), her mother the composer Ruth Crawford Seeger (1901–1953); Pete Seeger (1919–2014) her half-brother, Alan Seeger (1888–1916) her uncle. One of Peggy Seeger's first recordings with brother Mike was American Folk Songs for Children (1955). During the McCarthy era , she visited the People's Republic of China in the mid-1950s , whereupon her passport was confiscated. She therefore went on a European tour. Folk singer Ewan McColl fell in love with her during a performance in London in 1956 . In order to continue to get a work permit in Great Britain, she married the Scottish folk singer Alex Campbell in Paris in 1959 in order to obtain British citizenship and to be able to continue the relationship with MacColl. MacColl and Seeger were later able to marry. They lived together until MacColl's death in 1989 and had three children together (Neill, Callum and Kitty).

Seeger became part of the Critics' Group , in which socially critical songwriters from Great Britain had come together. Her songs are often union-oriented, but also deal with issues relating to the peace and women's movement . In 1994 she returned to the USA, where she now lives in Asheville .
