Assumption Church in Burgille

Burgille is a French municipality with 565 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Burgille is located at an altitude of 225  m above sea level, three kilometers south of Marnay and about 19 kilometers west of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends on a slightly elevated position on the southern edge of the wide valley of the Ognon , at the northern foot of the hilly landscape between the valleys of Ognon and Doubs .

The area of the 9.28 km² municipal area includes a section of the lower Ognontal. The northern border mostly runs along the Ognon, which flows here with several turns through an approximately three kilometer wide valley floor to the west. From the course of the river, the municipal area extends southward over the alluvial plain , which is an average of 200 m , which is predominantly made up of arable and meadow land, and into the valley of the Ruisseau du Moulin de Chazoy . Further south, the terrain gradually rises to the crests and plateaus of the gently undulating landscape between the Ognon and Doubs. This area shows a loose structure of meadow and forest. At 315 m, the highest point in Burgille is reached on the hill south of the village.

In addition to the actual village, Burgille also includes the following hamlets:

  • Chazoy ( 235  m ) slightly elevated on the southern slope of the Ruisseau du Moulin de Chazoy
  • Cordiron ( 220  m ) in the valley of the Ruisseau du Moulin de Chazoy

Neighboring communities of Burgille are Marnay and Ruffey-le-Château in the north, Franey in the east, Lavernay and Lantenne-Vertière in the south and Courchapon and Chenevrey-et-Morogne in the west.

history

The municipality of Burgille was settled very early. Remains of a Roman villa have been preserved, which was probably inhabited in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD and was one of the most important in Franche-Comté. In the Middle Ages, Burgille was the center of a rule that was under the sovereignty of the Dukes of Burgundy. Together with Franche-Comté , Burgille finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. A change of area occurred in 1972 when the previously independent municipalities Chazoy and Cordiron were merged with Burgille. Today Burgille is a member of the Val Marnaysien municipal association, which comprises 13 municipalities .

Attractions

The single-nave Ascension Church in Burgille was built in the 16th century in the Gothic Flamboyant style. The current castle of Burgille dates from the middle of the 18th century; next to it remains of an earlier building from the 16th and 17th centuries have been preserved. In Chazoy there is a manor house from the 16th century, consisting of a square donjon and a stair tower. Today it is used as an estate and has two large Renaissance windows on the east facade. In Cordiron the ruins of a tower have been preserved, which belonged to a mansion built in the 14th century and destroyed under Louis XIV.

After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (329 people were counted in 1886), the population has continued to grow steadily since the beginning of the 1980s. Since then the population has almost doubled.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Burgille was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Besançon agglomeration.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located near the main D67 road from Besançon to Gray . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around 15 kilometers away. There are further road connections with Jallerange, Recologne and Lantenne-Vertière.
