Grosbois is a French municipality with 238 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Grosbois is located at 368  m , four kilometers west of Baume-les-Dames and about 24 kilometers east-northeast of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The village extends in the undulating landscape between the river valleys of Doubs and Ognon , on a slope sloping to the southwest above the plateau that adjoins the Doubs valley to the north.

The area of the 2.96 km² large municipal area includes a section in the extreme northwestern mountain ranges of the Jura . The main part of the area is occupied by a plateau, which averages 340 m and extends north of the Doube valley. It is mostly made up of arable and meadow land, but also shows some forest areas ( Bois du Val ). There are no above-ground rivers in the entire area because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. To the east, the municipality extends to the heights of Grosbois, a long ridge that runs parallel to the Doubstal. The highest point in Grosbois is reached here at 436 m.

Neighboring communities of Grosbois are Baume-les-Dames in the north and east, Fourbanne in the south and Séchin in the west.

history

In the Middle Ages, Grosbois was part of the domain of Clerval , which had been under the sovereignty of the Counts of Montbéliard since the 14th century. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Today Grosbois is part of the Doubs Baumois municipal association .

After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (123 people were counted in 1891), a marked increase in population has been recorded again since the mid-1970s. Since then, the number of inhabitants has more than tripled.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Grosbois was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is close to the main road N83 that runs from Besançon to Montbéliard . The nearest connection to the A36 motorway , which crosses the municipality, is about nine kilometers away. Another road connection is with Fourbanne.
