The Mont Poupet is a 851 meter high mountain in the Jura department in France .
location
Mont Poupet is located north of Salins-les-Bains and belongs to the municipality of Saint-Thiébaud in the northwest of the Jura department. It forms the southeastern tip of a ridge running from northeast to southwest and towers over the valley of the Furieuse .
history
The wide view over the valley and the region was already appreciated in the Middle Ages. In the 13th century, a castle was built on the mountain that belonged to the lords of Montmahoux. Over time, a settlement was built next to the castle. The settlement and castle were built in 1479 by troops of King Louis XI. destroyed.
Mont Poupet became famous through Louis Pasteur , who tried to prove that germs do not arise spontaneously and that their number in the air decreases with increasing altitude.
geology
The summit consists mainly of the limestone typical of the Jura Mountains, which is visible on the southern slope of the summit. At the foot of the mountain there is mainly gray marl .
traffic
The département road D273 runs over the ridge coming from the south. The road forks here to the D261 towards Ivrey and the D102 towards Myon . The D270 and the D492 run in the valley around the mountain.
Transmission mast
On a 50 m high steel lattice mast at the summit there are two amateur radio relays and antennas for mobile telephony .
Sports
The Mont Poupet is mainly used by paragliders and hang-gliders. Since the GR 59 also runs on the mountain , the mountain is also popular with hikers. Every year in spring, the “Montée du Poupet” takes place, a 17.5 km run from Salins-les-Bains to the top of the mountain.
