Saint-Thiébaud is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Saint-Thiébaud is located 550  m north of Salins-les-Bains and about 31 km east-southeast of the city of Dole (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the western Jura , in a panoramic location on a terrace on the western slope of Mont Poupet , high above the valley of the Furieuse .

The area of the 7.94 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by Mont Poupet, on which the highest point of Saint-Thiébaud is reached at 850  m . With the exception of the summit area, Mont Poupet is densely forested and has rocky outcrops in various places on its slopes. The eastern demarcation runs in the valley of the Todeur, which runs south to the Lison . The western part of the municipality includes the terrace of Saint-Thiébaud and the height of the Bois de Méhaut to the north . Part of the eastern slope of the Furieuse valley also belongs to the municipality, but the area does not extend down to the river.

Neighboring municipalities of Saint-Thiébaud are Ivrey in the north, Salins-les-Bains in the east and south and La Chapelle-sur-Furieuse in the west.

history

Various finds indicate that the municipality of Saint-Thiébaud was already settled in prehistoric times and during the Gallo-Roman period. In the 13th century, there was a medieval castle on Mont Poupet that belonged to the lords of Montmahoux. Castle and the settlement of Poupet, which developed next to it, were in 1479 by the troops of King Louis XI. destroyed. The town of Saint-Thiébaud was first mentioned in a document in the 15th century. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. In 1740 it was made a marquisate.

Attractions

The village church of Saint-Thiébaud dates from the 16th century. The ruins of the medieval castle are visible on Mont Poupet, from which there is a beautiful view of the surroundings.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Saint-Thiébaud was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. Saint-Thiébaud has road links with Salins-les-Bains and Ivrey.
