Vaux-sur-Poligny is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Vaux-sur-Poligny is 400 m south-east of Poligny , about 22 kilometers north-east of the city of Lons-le-Saunier (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in the Culée de Vaux, an erosion valley that is cut around 150 m into the western part of the Lédonia plateau (first Jura plateau) and is crowned by striking rock faces in various places.
The area of the 1.26 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The entire area is taken up by the Culée de Vaux, which has a valley floor about 200 m wide and about one kilometer wide at the top. The valley is drained by the Glantine to the west to the Orain and thus to the Doubs . The upper edge of the valley, along which the municipal boundary runs, is closed by more or less high limestone walls. At 577 m , the highest point in Vaux-sur-Poligny is reached here.
Neighboring communities of Vaux-sur-Poligny are Poligny in the west, Chaussenans in the northeast and Barretaine in the south.
history
A Cluniac priory was founded in the Vaux basin in 1020 . The place name goes back to the old French word vau or vaul , which denotes a narrow valley. The monastery and the settlement that had developed next to it over time were occupied by the troops of King Louis XI. destroyed around 1480 and again in 1638. Together with Franche-Comté , Vaux came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
The monastery church and convent building have largely been preserved. The church was built in Gothic style in the 13th century and restored in the 19th century. The convent buildings with the cloister and a renaissance portal date from the 17th century . Today they house a private school with boarding school (Collège Notre Dame de Vaux). The manor house was built in the 19th century.
