Bracon

Bracon is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Bracon is located at 351  m , south of Salins-les-Bains , about 21 km north of the city of Champagnole (straight line). The village extends in the Jura , in the erosion valley of the Furieuse at the mouth of the Ruisseau de Gouaille, at the southern foot of Fort Belin.

The area of the 6.29 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area lies in the valley of the Furieuse, with the river often forming the eastern border. The community area extends to the west over the valley slope to a wide saddle that leads to the catchment area of the brook Vache , and also extends to the height of Fort Saint-André. The western boundary marks the transition to the plateau of the first Jura plateau with the Bois de Chaumois , the Croix d'Ivory and the plateau of Ivory. On a knoll east of the village of Ivory, the highest point of Bracon is reached at 626  m .

The hamlet of Arloz ( 505  m ) on the western slope of the Furieuse and some individual farms belong to Bracon . The neighboring municipalities of Bracon are Salins-les-Bains in the north and east, Chaux-Champagny and Ivory in the south and Pretin in the west.

history

Various finds indicate that the municipality of Bracon was already settled in prehistoric times. The castle of Bracon is mentioned in documents as early as the 6th century, destroyed by the Saracens in the 8th century and later rebuilt by Albéric von Narbonne. Over time, the Bracon settlement developed in the valley. A hospital founded in the 14th century was destroyed by fire in 1825. In the 15th century, Charles the Bold stayed in the castle. Bracon Castle was badly affected by the wars in the 16th and 17th centuries. Vauban finally had it demolished and founded Fort Lunette de Bracon, which was destroyed again in the course of the French Revolution . Since 1798 a total of eight attempts to incorporate the village into Salins-les-Bains failed due to the resistance of the residents of Bracon.

Attractions

The ruins of the Fort de Bracon (17th century) have been preserved.

With 273 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Bracon is one of the small communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (394 people were still counted in 1886), population growth was recorded again, especially during the 1970s and 80s. The settlement area of Bracon has now seamlessly merged with that of Salins-les-Bains.

Economy and Infrastructure

Bracon was a predominantly agricultural village well into the 20th century. In addition, there are now some local small business and retail businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, especially in Salins-les-Bains.

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main D472 road from Dole to Pontarlier via Salins-les-Bains . Further road connections exist with Champagnole and Pretin.
