Geraise is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Geraise is located at 672  m , east of Salins-les-Bains and about 24 km north of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , on the first Jura plateau, on a slope that slopes slightly to the west between the erosion valleys of the Furieuse in the west and the Lison in the east.

The area of the 6.04 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is taken up by the plateau of the Jura plateau, which is an average of 650  m and consists mainly of arable and meadow land. The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. The northern boundary forms the Bois Bovard . To the south, the municipality reaches in the Bois des Paules (up to 720  m ). On the hill east of the village, the highest point of Geraise is reached at 736  m . To the east of it is the erosion basin of the Bief de Vau (Seitenbach des Lison), the upper part of which also belongs to Geraise. The valley is cut deeply into the surrounding plateaus and is crowned at its upper edge by several rocky outcrops.

Neighboring municipalities of Geraise are Salins-les-Bains in the north, Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne and Sainte-Anne in the east, Cernans in the south and Clucy in the west.

history

Geraise was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century. In the 17th century there was a manor near the Gouffre du Gros-Gadeau (cave). Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

With 42 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Geraise is one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (127 people were still counted in 1886), only relatively minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Geraise was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from the D72, which runs from Salins-les-Bains to Pontarlier . There are other road connections with Clucy and Saizenay.
