Entrance to the municipality of Picarreau |
Picarreau is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Picarreau is located at 545 m , about 17 km northeast of the city of Lons-le-Saunier (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in the central part of the Plateau Lédonia (first Jura plateau), between the erosion valleys of the Seille (Cirque de Ladoye) in the west and the ridge of the Côte de l'Hoday in the east.
The area of the 8.96 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The entire area is taken up by the plain of the Plateau Lédonia, which lies at an average of 540 m and is partly made up of arable and meadow land, partly of forest. The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. To the east, the municipal area extends over the extensive forests of Bois du Fuatelet and Bois du Dos à l'Âne to the ridge of the Côte de l' Hado . The highest point in Picarreau is reached here at 628 m .
Picarreau's neighboring communities are Le Fied and Poligny in the north, Besain and Crotenay in the east, Bonnefontaine in the south and Fay-en-Montagne in the west.
history
The municipality of Picarreau was populated very early. A Roman traffic route passed near the village, which was a trade route that connected the former settlements at Poligny and Villards-d'Héria . Several Roman wells were also discovered on the site. The medieval place name Puis-Carréal changed over time via Puiscarraul to today's Picarreau. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
The Picarreau village church was consecrated in 1809. At the eastern exit of the village there is a statue of the Holy Virgin, which was erected in 1920 because the village had been spared by German troops during World War I.

With 101 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Picarreau is one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (234 people were counted in 1886), only relatively minor fluctuations have been recorded since the mid-1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Picarreau was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry until well into the 20th century. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a departmental road (Route départementale D5 (39), also: RD5 (39)) that leads from Voiteur via Crotenay to Champagnole . Other road connections exist with Besain, Fay-en-Montagne and Bonnefontaine.
