Chamole is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Chamole is located at 545  m above Poligny , about 23 km northeast of the city of Lons-le-Saunier (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in the western part of the Plateau Lédonia (first Jura plateau), north of the Vaux basin (Culée de Vaux).

The area of the 5.78 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. Almost the entire area is taken up by the plain of the Plateau Lédonia, which lies at an average of 560  m and is mainly made up of arable land and meadow, partly also of forest. At 603  m , the highest point in Chamole is reached here. The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. The south-western demarcation runs along the upper edge of the steep slope (Roche du Pénitent), which is partly criss-crossed by rock faces and surrounds the deeply cut valley of Vaux. In contrast, the western border lies roughly at the middle of the steep slope that leads to the Dole plain . In the east and northeast, the municipal area extends to the edge of the extensive wooded areas of Forêt de Poligny and Bois de Buvilly.

Neighboring communities of Chamole are Poligny in the west, north and east and Chaussenans in the south.

history

Saint-Jacques church

The municipality of Chamole was already settled during the Gallo-Roman period. The place was first mentioned in a document in the 13th century. In June 1638, Duke Charles of Lorraine, who commanded the Spanish troops, defeated the French army under Henri II d''Orleans , Duke of Longueville . Together with Franche-Comté , Chamole came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

The village church of Saint-Jacques was built in 1834. The Saint-Jacques chapel dates from the 16th century. Furthermore, a stone wayside cross (13th century), the remains of the old castle chapel and a mansion with a staircase tower should be mentioned.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Chamole was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from Poligny. Further road connections exist with Buvilly and Chaussenans.
