Mairie Besain |
Besain is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Besain is located at 530 m , about 22 kilometers northeast of the city of Lons-le-Saunier (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , in a wide clearing in the central part of the Plateau Lédonia (first Jura plateau), between the erosion valley of the Culée de Vaux in the west and the ridge of the Côte de l'Heute in the east.
The area of the 12.84 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the plain of the Plateau Lédonia, which lies at an average of 530 m and consists partly of arable land and meadow, partly of forest. South of the village is the Bois du Chaumoy , north of the Bois de Besain and the Forêt des Moidons . The western boundary runs along the Forêt de Poligny . The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. To the east, the community area extends over a relatively steep slope to the wooded ridge of the Côte de l'Heute , which separates the plateau from the Ain Valley to the east . Besain's highest point is reached on the ridge at 640 m .
Besain's neighboring municipalities are Molain in the north, Montrond and Crotenay in the east, Picarreau in the south and Poligny in the west.
history
Besain was first mentioned in a document in 1069. A church has also been documented since the 12th century. In the 14th century Besain was granted certain freedoms. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
The current village church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste von Besain was rebuilt in the 19th century.

With 161 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Besain is one of the small communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (in 1881 there were still 341 people), slight population growth has been recorded since the beginning of the 1980s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Besain was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Picarreau to Montrond. Further road connections exist with Molain and Poligny.
