La Chatelaine is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

La Châtelaine is located at 570  m , southeast of Arbois and about 30 km northeast of the city of Lons-le-Saunier (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , in a clearing in the northern part of the Plateau Lédonia (first Jura plateau), east of the erosion valley Val de la Cuisance above the Reculée des Planches.

The area of the 13.17 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. Almost the entire area is taken up by the plateau of the Lédonia plateau, which is an average of 560  m and is partly made up of arable land and meadow, partly of forest. The western border mostly runs on the upper edge of the steep slope, partly criss-crossed by rock walls, which surrounds the deeply cut valley of the Cuisance. The rock faces of the Reculée des Planches and the Cirque du Fer à Cheval , at the foot of which are the karst springs of the Cuisance, are particularly striking . In the west, the municipal soil extends into the Forêt d'Arbois . The community area extends to the south and south-east into the Forêt des Moidons and the Bois de la Châtelaine . The highest point of La Châtelaine is reached here at 633  m . The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil.

Neighboring municipalities of La Châtelaine are Mesnay in the north, Ivory and Chilly-sur-Salins in the east, Valempoulières and Molain in the south and Arbois and Les Planches-près-Arbois in the west.
