Tavaux town hall

Tavaux is a French commune in the Jura department , Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region with an area of 1368 hectares and 3918 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). The place is located on the Canal du Rhône au Rhin 3 km southwest of Dole .

history

Tavaux is located on the old trade route (now the national road N73) that leads from Besançon to Chalon-sur-Saône and was first fortified by the Romans. Remains of Gallo-Roman houses testify to a settlement that was probably destroyed in the 4th century.

The municipality is divided into the old village of Tavaux-Village and the settlement of Tavaux-Cité, a workers' settlement at the Solvay chemical plant, which was built in the 1930s. In the 1950s, the “La Mulotte” district was built between these two districts.

Buildings

There are two sacred buildings: the Saint-Gervais-et-Saint Protais church from the 19th century with wall paintings by Gowenius and the Sainte-Anne church, built in 1938/39 in the workers' estate "Tavaux-Cité".

economy

Tavaux has been the location of a large chemical plant of the Belgian Solvay group since 1928 , which developed from the processing of the salt from the nearby saltworks of Arc-et-Senans and Salins-les-Bains into soda . Today, in addition to soda, the plant produces many inorganic and organic basic chemicals as well as specialty chemicals for fluorine chemistry, chlorine chemistry and plastics .

traffic

The small Dole-Jura airport (formerly Aéroport de Dole-Tavaux ) is located on the south-eastern edge of the town .

To the east runs the Autoroute A39 (Autoroute verte) , which can be reached after a few kilometers via the D 595 and junction 5 (Dôle Center).

Parish partnership

Tavaux's partner municipality is the German municipality of Friesenheim in Baden-Württemberg.
