Cernans is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Cernans is located at 640 m , east of Salins-les-Bains and about 21 km north of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , on the first Jura plateau, on a wide saddle east of the erosion valley of the Furieuse .
The area of the 5.51 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The entire area is taken up by the plateau of the Jura, which is an average of 650 m and consists mainly of arable and meadow land. The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. To the south the parish soil extends to the heights of Thésy, on which the highest elevation of Cernans is reached at 724 m . The western boundary mostly runs along the upper edge of the steep slope, partly surmounted by rock faces, which slopes down to the deeply cut valley of the Furieuse with the valley basin of Blégny. In the north, the municipal area extends to the height of the Bois des Paules ( 702 m ).
Neighboring municipalities of Cernans are Clucy , Geraise and Sainte-Anne in the north, Dournon in the east, Abergement-lès-Thésy in the south and Salins-les-Bains in the west.
history
Various finds indicate that the municipality of Cernans was already settled in the Neolithic and Gallo-Roman times. The existence of a church was first documented in writing in 1109. Together with Franche-Comté , Cernans came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
The originally Romanesque church of Cernans was restored and redesigned in the 16th century. The parish hall was built in the neoclassical style.

With 140 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Cernans is one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (258 people were still counted in 1886), only relatively minor fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1990s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Cernans was a predominantly agricultural village. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main D72 road from Salins-les-Bains to Pontarlier . Further road connections exist with Geraise and Abergement-lès-Thésy.
