Viticulture
The most important economic factor in Arbois is viticulture . Wines from the region were praised in drinking songs as early as the Renaissance period. Today the city is the center of the appellation of the same name in the Jura wine-growing region with around 842 hectares of vineyards, which includes Arbois itself and the neighboring village of Pupillin (wines from there are called Arbois Pupillin ).
The Arbois appellation is awarded to 13 municipalities in the region around the town of Arbois. In 2002, 22,521 hectoliters of red and rosé wine, 14 516 hl of white wine, 539 hl of Vin de Paille and 260 hl of Crémant were produced on the entire vineyard area. This makes it the most important appellation in the Jura, even though it is an enclave within the Côtes du Jura.
The white wines consist of the grape varieties Savagnin ( called Traminer elsewhere ), Chardonnay and Pinot blanc (see Arbois (grape variety) ).
The red wines are dominated by the typical grape varieties Poulsard (also called Plussard) and Trousseau , and Pinot noir is also used. Rosé wines are also produced. When processed into sparkling wine, the Arbois wines are sold as Arbois mousseux . A specialty of the region is the Vin Jaune from the Savagnin grape, which has a taste reminiscent of a dry sherry and can be stored for 50 years or more. A straw wine , the Vin de paille , is also produced in small quantities . Another local product is Macvin, a fortified wine with 20% alcohol and a high level of residual sugar.
Well-known producers are Lucien Aviet, Maurice Chassot, Domaine de la Croix d'Argis, Fruitière Vinicole de Pupillin, Domaine Michel Geneletti, Jean Pierre et Marie-France Ligier, Jean-François Nevers, Daniel Overnoy-Crinquand, Domaine Pierre Overnoy, Domaine de la Pinte, Jacques Puffeney, Domaine Rolet and Jacques Tissot. The most important negociant (wine merchant) in the region, based in Arbois, is Henri Maire, who purchases, blends, produces and sells around half of the Jura production. His branded wine "Vin Fou" (in German "crazy wine" - a Vin Jaune) is known throughout France. He also owns the two wineries Domaine de la Grange Villard and Domaine du Sorbief.
The Biou Festival is celebrated in Arbois on the first Sunday in September .
Arbois is embedded in the Jura wine country. An 80 km stretch of land with the Revermont vineyards stretches from north to south of the Jura department .
Here one calls this area with all its treasures “Le Bon Pays”, the good land: four AOC appellations (Côtes du Jura, L'Étoile, Arbois and Arbois-Pupillin, Château-Chalon), two product labels AOC ( Crémant du Jura and Macvin du Jura) and five grape varieties (Chardonnay, Savagnin, Poulsard, Trousseau and Pinot Noir) bear witness to the diversity of regional viticulture.
Arbois, Salins and Poligny form the golden triangle, which is well known among lovers of excellent, down-to-earth products from the terroir. Château-Chalon, home of yellow wine, Pupillin, the capital of a Ploussard who lives from being different, and Gevingey or Rotalier are typical wine-growing villages in the south of the Jura wine-growing region.
The Jura wines have been recognized for a long time. Documents show that the area has been growing in the area since the 10th century in Arbois and in the 16th century in Château-Chalon .
For centuries, the noble landowners have developed techniques for making excellent wine. Nevertheless, the success of viticulture is closely linked to strong social cohesion. In addition to the large companies, there are also modest entrepreneurs who have formed cooperatives since 1906. The cooperative "Coopérative Fruitière Vinicole d'Arbois" was the first, which was founded in France.
Even today, the winemakers of the Jura come together in a wide variety of organizations and thus found appellations with the AOC seal of approval. Arbois was the first wine-growing region to receive this seal of approval on May 15, 1936, followed by Château-Chalon, which was allowed to decorate itself with it just a few days later.
The people who shaped local viticulture in the Jura include:
- Louis Pasteur became the father of modern oenology for his work on fermentation of wine
- Pierre-Marie Alexis Millardet , inventor of the copper lime broth ( Bordeaux broth ) for pest control
- Charles Rouget, author of a remarkable grape variety research with all grape varieties represented in the Jura
- Joseph Girard, advocate for the recognition of the AOC seal of approval.
