Molain is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Molain is located at 580  m , east of Poligny and about 25 km northeast of the city of Lons-le-Saunier (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , in a wide clearing in the northern part of the Plateau Lédonia (first Jura plateau), between the erosion valley of the Culée de Vaux in the west and the crest of the Côte de l'H heute in the east.

The area of the 11.50 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The entire area is taken up by the plateau of the Lédonia plateau, which is an average of 580  m and consists partly of arable land and meadow, partly of forest. The western border runs on a hill in the Bois de Molain ( 602  m ), while the southern boundary is formed by the main road N5. The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. To the east, the municipality extends over the plateau to the northeastern foothills of the Côte de l'Heute , on which the highest elevation of Molain is reached at 681  m .

Neighboring communities of Molain are Arbois and La Châtelaine in the north, Valempoulières in the east, Montrond and Besain in the south and Poligny in the west.

history

Various finds indicate that the municipality of Molain was already settled during the Gallo-Roman period. The church of Molain is mentioned for the first time in the 11th century. In the Middle Ages, Molain formed its own small lordship that was dependent on the priory of Vaux-sur-Poligny . Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Attractions

The current village church of Molain was rebuilt in the 16th century. One of the natural attractions is the Grotto des Moidons.

With 105 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Molain is one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (281 people were still counted in 1881), a slight population growth has been recorded since the mid-1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Molain was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is off the main thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the main road N5, which runs from Poligny to Champagnole . Other road connections exist with Arbois, Besain and Valempoulières.
