Chilly-sur-Salins is a municipality in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Chilly-sur-Salins is located at 625  m , south of Salins-les-Bains and about 34 km northeast of the city of Lons-le-Saunier (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , in the far north of the Lédonia plateau (first Jura plateau), between the erosion valleys of the Cuisance in the west and the Furieuse in the east.

The area of the 11.94 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Jura. The entire area is taken up by the plateau of the Lédonia plateau, which is an average of 620  m , rises slightly to the east and is partly made up of arable land and meadows, partly of forest. The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. To the south, the community area extends into the extensive forest of the Forêt des Moidons . Here, at 695  m, the highest point in Chilly-sur-Salins is reached.

Neighboring communities of Chilly-sur-Salins are Ivory in the north, Chaux-Champagny in the east, Valempoulières in the south and La Châtelaine in the west.

history

Chilly is first mentioned in a document in the 12th century. The place name goes back to the Gallo-Roman surname Callius and means something like Callius' estate (Cailliacum).

Economy and Infrastructure

Chilly-sur-Salins was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry well into the 20th century. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Arbois to Andelot-en-Montagne . Other road connections exist with Chaux-Champagny and Montrond.
