Saizenay is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Saizenay is located at 512 m , northeast of Salins-les-Bains and about 35 km east-southeast of the city of Dole (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , in a valley between Mont Poupet in the north-west and the heights of the first Jura plateau in the south-east.
The area of the 4.88 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The main part of the area is taken up by the valley of Saizenay, which has a width of about one kilometer and a length of four kilometers. This valley depression is drained by the todeur to the north to the Lison . In the north the basin is flanked by the Bois Chaudreux (up to 600 m ), in the south by the height of the first Jura plateau , with the border mostly running on the upper edge of the slope, which is partly crowned by rocky outcrops. The community area extends to the east in the Bois de Saizenay . Here, at 735 m, the highest peak of Saizenay is reached.
Neighboring municipalities of Saizenay are Salins-les-Bains in the south, west and north and Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne in the east.
history
The municipality of Saizenay was already settled in prehistoric times and during the Gallo-Roman times. The place was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century. Saizenay belonged to the Templars of Salins in the Middle Ages . Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
Attractions
The village church, a former chapel of the Knights Templar, has a bell tower from the 14th century and a pulpit from the 16th century.

With 95 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Saizenay is one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (256 people were still counted in 1886), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Saizenay was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are few jobs in the village. Some employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is located off the main thoroughfares near the D492 department road that leads from Salins-les-Bains to Ornans . Further road connections exist with Geraise and Myon.
