life and work

Ronell was in Prague as a child of Israeli born diplomat and was a performance artist before turning to academic studies. She studied with Jacob Taubes at the Institute for Hermeneutics at the Free University of Berlin , received her doctorate in 1979 from Princeton University and then continued her studies with Jacques Derrida and Hélène Cixous in Paris.

Avital Ronell taught comparative literature at the University of California, Berkeley before moving to New York University (NYU) where she established a research platform on trauma and violence. While she taught regularly with Judith Butler , Jean-Luc Nancy and Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe at Berkeley , she initially taught at New York University at the side of her friend and sponsor Jacques Derrida .

In her work she deals with the phenomena of the ghostly in literature ( Dictations ), the question of technology ( The Telephone Book ), the connection between drugs and poetry ( Crack Wars ), the position of stupidity in the history of philosophy ( Stupidity ), the positivistic need to generate empirical evidence ( The Test Drive ) and the problem of paternal authority ( Loser Sons ).

Authors to whom she repeatedly refers in her writings include the German-speaking poets Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , Friedrich Hölderlin , Rainer Maria Rilke and Franz Kafka ; the philosophers Friedrich Nietzsche , Walter Benjamin and Martin Heidegger ; the psychoanalysts Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan ; as well as numerous thinkers of recent French philosophy such as Emmanuel Levinas , Jean-François Lyotard , Jean-Luc Nancy and above all Jacques Derrida .

In the documentaries The Call: Philosophy im Bild 1 (2005) by Arno Böhler , Examined Life (2008) by Astra Taylor and Derrida (2002) by Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering, Ronell was interviewed and their work presented.

Title IX procedure

In early April 2018, former doctoral student Nimrod Reitman filed a Title IX lawsuit against Ronell at NYU for "sexual assault" and "sexual assault." The case, which NYU was negotiating behind closed doors, became public early when Judith Butler , Slavoj Žižek , Jean-Luc Nancy and almost 50 other people from Ronell's university environment addressed a letter to the President of NYU. They defended Ronell's care style with their intellectual brilliance and their "international reputation and reputation". The letter was leaked on Brian Leiter's Philosophy Blog and discussed controversially, saying that it was a sign of a professorial corps spirit, disavowing the victim in order to improperly influence the Title IX proceedings then underway. In August 2018, NYU found Ronell guilty of sexual assault and suspended her from teaching for an academic year without pay. After their return, according to one condition, Ronell can only look after students in a supervised setting; NYU reserves the right to further sanctions. On August 16, 2018, Reitman also filed a lawsuit against Ronell and NYU in the New York Civil Courts for sexual harassment, assault, and stalking. In the wake of #MeToo , the Ronell case raised international questions about the abuse of power in university supervisory relationships . On the occasion of the proceedings against Ronell, Bernd Hüppauf took a critical review of the university situation.
