Werner Hamacher

Werner Hamacher (born April 27, 1948 ; † July 7, 2017 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German comparativeist and literary theorist . He was one of the few thinkers in Germany who productively received the philosophemes and thought strategies of post-structuralist deconstruction and were also perceived internationally. As one of the translators of the writings of Paul de Mans and Jacques Lacan , he made important contributions to conveying these theoreticians.

Life

Hamacher studied comparative literature , philosophy , German and religious studies at the Free University of Berlin and the École Normale Supérieure in Paris . One of his academic teachers in Paris was Jacques Derrida , who, like Paul de Man, had a major influence on his work. He completed his studies with a thesis on Hegel's dialectical hermeneutics.

From 1984 to 1998 he was Professor of German and the Humanities at Johns Hopkins University . He held visiting professorships a. a. at Yale University , the University of Amsterdam and the École Normale Supérieure. From 1998 to 2013 he taught as a professor of general and comparative literature at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , and since 2003 also as a Global Distinguished Professor at New York University . He also held the Emmanuel Lévinas Professorship at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee.

Since 1992 he has published the book series Meridian - Crossing Aesthetics .

archive

Werner Hamacher's archive was acquired by the German Literature Archive in Marbach in December 2017 . It contains philological and philosophical notebooks, manuscripts and typescripts of own writings and unpublished works, as well as correspondence with writers and scholars such as Jacques Derrida and Maurice Blanchot , as well as a collection of photographs.
