Jean-Luc Nancy (2010)

Jean-Luc Nancy (born July 26, 1940 in Caudéran (now Bordeaux ), France , † August 23, 2021 in Strasbourg ) was a French philosopher who stood in the tradition of deconstruction and phenomenology .

Life

After studying philosophy in Paris, he did his doctorate on Immanuel Kant with the philosopher Paul Ricœur . In 1968 Nancy became an assistant at the Université Marc Bloch in Strasbourg , where he later also became a professor of philosophy. He held visiting professorships in Berkeley, Berlin, Irvine and San Diego.

Scientific work

Nancy dealt in his work with various questions about philosophy, literature and current affairs to aesthetics. He was also involved in the socio-political context, so that he, inter alia. 1980 founded the Center de Recherches Philosophiques sur la politique (Center for philosophical research on politics) in Paris with the philosopher Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe . With this experiment, Nancy wanted to encourage philosophical reflection on the retreat of the political. Four years later both ended this project because they did not see the goal adequately addressed. Furthermore, Nancy, strongly influenced by the thinking of Martin Heidegger and Jacques Derrida , thematized the community of human existence, with Nancy placing his focus on togetherness, which he conceptualized as “singular pluralism” as a basic figure of his philosophy.

In addition, the religious movements of the modern age and the effects of globalization were a field of work for Nancy. In his analysis of what he called the “deconstruction of Christianity”, he pushed for an integrative style. This tendency becomes very clear , for example, in his reading of the “ Noli me tangere ” (You may not touch me), which Christ pronounces to Mary Magdalene. Nancy tried to break the body-soul dualism in Western thought.

Controversy over Heidegger

After Nancy had said in an article in the French newspaper Liberation in 2017 that the dispute over Heidegger's Nazi past was intended to "exorcise" the fascist elements of Western civilizations, while Heidegger also had contempt for Nazism as early as the 1930s showed, as a result of the contradiction there was an international debate about Heidegger's role in relation to Nazi crimes.

Trivia

Directed by Claire Denis , Nancy starred in a part of Ten Minutes Older : The Cello (2002), which discusses the relationship between integration and intrusion. Nancy's text "L'Intrus" inspired Claire Denis to write the film of the same name.
