Work and meaning

Georg Christoph Tholen stands for a new cultural studies approach to media theory that became increasingly popular from the 1980s onwards: his approach examines technical media, especially computers and the digital . In contrast to Friedrich Kittler , who rather assumes a media-technical a priori , Tholen brings his media concept to the common denominator of the in-between: “The most fundamental definition of the medium” [is] that of the “in-between”: Signs and media open up a spectrum of differences. Media are distinctions that make a difference.
