Paul Virilio

Paul Virilio (born January 4, 1932 in Paris ; † September 10, 2018 there ) was a French philosopher and critic of the media society . Virilio was best known as a simulation , virtuality and speed theorist as well as the founder of dromology .

Life

Virilio, whose father had fled from Italy to France as a communist before the fascist regime , studied architecture and urbanism and trained as a master glass maker. During the Second World War , in Nantes , he saw the city being bombed by Allied planes . He did his military service as a cartographer in Freiburg im Breisgau and in the Algerian War. He worked as an architect, urban planner, exhibition maker, studio manager and member of the editorial team of various magazines. In 1976 his exhibition on "Bunker Archeology" took place in the Center Georges Pompidou .

Virilio was professor from 1969 and director of studies from 1973 at the École Spéciale d'Architecture in Paris. In 1979 he founded the Center interdisciplinaire de recherche de la paix et d′études stratégiques (“Interdisciplinary Center for Peace Research and Strategic Studies”) together with Alain Joxe . He retired in 1997 and has since devoted himself to his dromological research.
