Michel Serres
Michel Serres (born September 1, 1930 in Agen , † June 1, 2019 in Vincennes ) was a French philosopher . Serres was a philosophy professor at the Sorbonne in Paris and at Stanford University in California . In 1990 he was accepted into the Académie française . He wrote more than 50 books.
Career
In 1949 Serres entered the French Naval School in Brest , then in 1952 in the École normal supérieure (Paris) , where he received the Agrégation for Philosophy in 1955 . From 1956 to 1958 he did his military service in the French Navy , with which he also took part in the Sinai War . In the following years he accepted a teaching position at the University of Blaise Pascal Clermont-Ferrand II , where he met Michel Foucault and his teacher Jules Vuillemin . In 1968 he obtained his Doctorat d'État en Lettres. After a short stay at Johns Hopkins University with the support of René Girard , who taught there , in 1969 he was appointed professor for the history of science at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne . 1984 followed a parallel appointment as professor at Stanford University . On March 29, 1990, he was elected to Fauteuil 18 of the Académie française , which was held before Philippe Pétain , André François-Poncet and Edgar Faure .
In 1994 Serres was named President of the Scientific Advisory Board for the France 5 educational channel.
Serres died on June 1, 2019 at the age of 88.
theory
Michel Serres developed a communication theory based on Claude E. Shannon's information model and influenced by cybernetic approaches : In his theory, Serres placed the messenger at the center. This messenger is described in his work Der Parasit partly as a parasite and partly as a joker for the act of communication . Have taken up this approach z. B. in sociological systems theory u. a. the authors Niklas Luhmann , Maren Lehmann , Dirk Baecker , but also Bruno Latour .
Appreciations
- In 1987 Serres was admitted to the Ordre national du Mérite as an officer and in 1997 received his doctorate as Commandeur . He was also a member of the Legion of Honor : Chevalier since 1985, Officer since 1993, Commandeur since 2001 and Grand Officer since July 14, 2010, the French national holiday .
- In 2012 he was awarded the Meister Eckhart Prize .
- In 2013 he received the Dan David Prize .
