Dirk Baecker (born August 11, 1955 in Karlsruhe ) is a German sociologist and holder of the chair for cultural theory and management at the University of Witten / Herdecke .

Life

After graduating from high school at Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Cologne and studying sociology and economics in Cologne and Paris , he received his doctorate and habilitation in sociology with Niklas Luhmann at the University of Bielefeld. After research at the Stanford University , Johns Hopkins University and the London School of Economics he received in 1996 the reputation of the Reinhard Mohn -Lehrstuhl for corporate governance, business ethics and social change at the University of Witten / Herdecke . From 2000 to 2007 he held the chair of sociology there. Together with Fritz B. Simon and Rudi Wimmer , he founded the Witten Management Center in January 2000.

In 2006, Baecker was offered the new chair for cultural theory and analysis at the Zeppelin University (ZU), where he researched and taught from 2007 to 2015. In 2015 he was recalled to the University of Witten / Herdecke, where Baecker is now head of the chair for cultural theory and management and the faculty for cultural reflection. Since his call to Witten / Herdecke in 2015, he has also been a visiting professor for cultural sociology at the Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen.

Act

Baecker is a representative of sociological systems theory and has worked on a variety of sociological areas and questions. This includes works on the theory of art as well as the symbolically generalized communication media . However, he emerged as an economic and organizational sociologist with publications on the topics of planning and decision theory , management theory and studies on the concept of risk . Baecker also grappled with the logic of George Spencer-Brown .

Baecker is also co-editor of the periodicals Soziale Systeme and the Revue - Magazine for the Next Society , and he was editor of the book series copyrights at the Berlin cultural publishing house Kadmos .
