Cultural theory

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Under cultural theory refers to the developing theoretical foundations of cultural studies research. Analogous to the other use of the term theory (e.g. in literary theory , film theory , etc.), the term refers to both the individual theoretical drafts and the entirety of these theories.

Each individual cultural theory is a theoretical draft to understand “ culture ” in general (as opposed to “society”, for example ) or the phenomena, mechanisms and basic structures of the culture of a particular community or ethnic group . Often, however, it is also a question of counter-drafts to theories of human nature and to theories of non-man-made, "uncultivated" nature .

Cultural theory is thus at the intersection of various scientific disciplines such as sociology , ethnology , anthropology , but also art theory , political science and history , provided that these aim at the fundamental characteristics of culture or cultures in their comprehensive sense and thus a fundamental understanding of the totality of human beings Strive for expressions of life in social interaction.

Michael Buchholz , for example, gave an impression of the various facets of the topic based on some of the relevant literature in 2013 in his series Kleiner Literaturrundflug published by the DGPT under the title The Thinking of Culture .
