Doris Bachmann-Medick , maiden name Doris Bachmann (born September 8, 1952 ) is a German literary and cultural scientist .

Life

After studying German language and literature , geography , art history and philosophy Doris Bachmann-Medick worked in the job "Index to the German magazines of the 18th century" the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities and was 1986 in German Literature Dr. phil. PhD. Since the 1990s she has worked for various research projects and institutes: 1991–1993 at the Department of German Philology at the University of Göttingen on the subject of “Literary Anthropology - Anthropological Literature. Cultural transitions and the interdependence of the disciplines in the cultural and human sciences ”; 1994–1996 in the Göttingen Collaborative Research Center “The Literary Translation” and in 2005 as a member of the Department of History and Cultural Studies at the Free University of Berlin .

In addition to teaching positions at the University of Göttingen, the University of Potsdam , the European University Viadrina , the Free University of Berlin and the University of Zurich , she has held numerous visiting professorships in the United States ( University of California, Los Angeles ; University of Michigan , Ann Arbor; University of California, Irvine ; University of Cincinnati ; Georgetown University , Washington, DC) and to Austria to the University of Graz . In the winter semester 2005/2006 she was also a fellow at the International Research Center for Cultural Studies in Vienna. Since 2007 she has been researching and teaching as a Senior Research Fellow at the International Graduate Center for the Study of Culture (GCSC) at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen , which has been funded since 2006 as part of the Excellence Initiative of the federal and state governments.

Doris Bachmann-Medick is married to the historian Hans Medick .

Research priorities

Doris Bachmann-Medick's research interests include cultural studies, literary anthropology, cultural theory, cultural studies translation research, and intercultural communication. The influential concept volume Kultur als Text, published by her, fueled the cultural-anthropological turnaround in literary studies in Germany. The term “ culture as text ”, which has meanwhile been used, goes back to this volume . In her monograph Cultural Turns, which has been published and translated many times, she also shows the inner "differentiation impulses" of the so-called cultural turn and makes its various orientations visible and interdisciplinary. She dedicates her current research to translation as a category for cultural studies research. Among other things, she deals with human rights as a translation problem and with migration as a process and challenge of cultural and social translation.
