The International Graduate Center for the Study of Culture (GCSC) at the Justus Liebig University Gießen was founded in 2006 by its director Ansgar Nünning . After being one of the first humanities institutions in 2006 to impress with a structured doctoral program with a clear cultural-scientific research profile within the framework of the Excellence Initiative of the federal government and the states, the center was included in the second funding phase of the Excellence Initiative in 2012.

The GCSC is part of the Gießen Graduate Center for Cultural Studies (GGK), which was founded in 2001 and served as a “pioneering model for the reform of German doctoral training”. While the GGK has a basic program aimed at all doctoral students at JLU in the social, cultural and humanities departments, the GCSC has an international focus and a high proportion of international doctoral students. It promotes diversity and equal opportunities. The center awards up to 13 scholarships each year.

Main objectives

The main goals of the GCSC are the establishment of ideal conditions for doctoral studies, the development of new approaches and methods in cultural studies as well as the achievement of a pioneering role in international cultural studies research and the further development of long-term cooperation with international graduate schools. In the second funding phase, a strategic qualification program for postdocs will also be developed.

research

In eight different research areas (so-called research areas), the scientific program is dedicated to research into culture.

Research areas

  • Research Area 1: Cultural Memory Studies
  • Research Area 2: Cultural Narratologies
  • Research Area 3: Cultural Transformation and Performativity Studies
  • Research Area 4: Visual and Material Culture Studies
  • Research Area 5: Media and Multiliteracy Studies
  • Research Area 6: Cultural Identities
  • Research Area 7: Global Studies and Politics of Space
  • Research Area 8: Cultures of Knowledge, Research, and Education

In addition, various working groups work on so-called emerging topics in cultural studies research. The GCSC operates a concept-based study of culture with an interdisciplinary and international focus .

Structured study program

The structured, holistic study program of the GCSC is under the motto "Doctorate with a system": It guides its doctoral students with various event formats such as basic and advanced doctoral courses, workshops, guest lectures, keynote lectures, masterclasses and disputation courses from the first semester to the disputation. The teaching center gives doctoral students support in their teaching, while the Career Service prepares them for careers after completing their doctorate. The program is "tailored to the needs of the target groups and thus helps to shorten doctoral times".

Events

In addition to the study program, the GCSC organizes various events: every year, the career congress offers doctoral candidates orientation for their later professional life under a different topic. On the Information Day, interested students can find out about a possible doctorate in cultural studies. In addition, the GCSC alternates with various partner universities as part of the European Summer School in Cultural Studies (ESSCS). In 2013, the summer school organized by the GCSC took place as part of the Ruhrtriennale .

National and international partners and networks

The GCSC is integrated into various international networks with other universities (e.g. Stanford University , Catholic University Portugal , Macquarie University , Sydney). The GCSC also maintains partnerships with university and non-university institutions; such as the Center for 21st Century Studies (C21), Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the Gotha Research Center for cultural and social science studies , the German Literature Archive in Marbach and the Leibniz Institute for European History . Together with the Universities of Stockholm, Bergamo, Helsinki, Lisbon and Graz, it runs the European PhD program “Literary and Cultural Studies”. Since 2014, the GCSC has also been involved in the transatlantic graduate program IGHERT of the Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes, which aims to develop new formats for collaborative international research in the humanities.

Publications

The review portal KULT_online provides information about new publications in cultural studies and offers doctoral candidates and postdocs the opportunity to publish at an early stage. In addition, the in-house series Concepts for the Study of Culture is published by Verlag Walter de Gruyter and the series Contributions to the Study of Culture and English Literary and Cultural History are published by Wissenschaftlicher Verlag Trier.
