Essen monument trails

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The monument trails in Essen have linked cultural and industrial historical sites since 2003. The monument paths are an initiative of the Essen citizens' associations to create awareness of local history, arouse the desire to go new ways and to discover things that have been overlooked in familiar ways. Information boards with information about the property are set up and hiking guides with maps are issued. The monument trails also do not include objects that have been listed , but have so far been limited to the south of Essen. The project is supported by the respective district representatives, the monument office and the office for geoinformation as well as local advertising associations and companies.

history

  1. Designation of historical sites in the form of explanation boards was originally only carried out in the area of the former Essen Abbey (founded by the "Historical Association for the City and Abbey of Essen" and funded by the City of Essen). Around 1998 the boards were renewed as the "Essen Monument Trail" through the city of Essen.
  2. In the districts that were incorporated from 1889 to 1971, there were only small memorial signs on registered monuments until 1998.
  3. In 1999, the "Historischen Verein Werden" (Historical Association) and in cooperation with the Citizens' Association, District Representation IX and Werdener Werbering installed a historical tour describing important archaeological and historical points on 15 boards. Such efforts have also been made in other parts of the city.
  4. The "Bürgerschaft Rellinghausen / Stadtwald eV" in the former Rellinghausen Abbey set up two old colliery gates in 2002 and equipped them with information boards. The idea was pursued to designate other historical sites and to document this in a flyer. In the spring of 2003 this was reported in the general meeting of the "City Association of Citizens and Transport Associations Essen eV". The idea was gladly accepted.
  5. The then managing director of the "Stadtverband der Essener Bürger und Verkehrsvereine eV" (J. Rainer Busch) took the initiative and invited the representatives of the citizens' associations from Heisingen, Rellinghausen and Kupferdreh to a work meeting in Kupferdreh. There an agreement was reached in June 2003 to define a common procedure to designate all historical monuments within the city by means of hiking trails, so-called "monument trails". Furthermore, these paths should be documented by appropriate "hiking guides to historical sites" and the respective places should be equipped with explanatory boards. Since then, this initiative has been carried out without the participation of the city of Essen, but with the support of the district representatives.

execution

Each district first creates a monument hiking guide. The hiking guides come with a map on which the hiking routes and historical sites are marked. The maps are produced and licensed in cooperation with the Office for Geoinformation of the City of Essen. The individual hiking trails indicate connection points to the neighboring towns.

The historical objects that still exist are equipped with small aluminum panels (10 × 20 cm). In addition to the coat of arms of the district, these boards contain a logo for cultural or industrial-historical sites.

Large-format explanatory boards are set up in prominent places in the district or where there is no longer any monument substance. Explanation boards put up.

From 2004 to 2010 a total of 11 double panels and 3 simple information panels were set up in Kupferdreh . The Kupferdreher Monument Guide (JR Busch) was published in 2003.

In Rellinghausen / Stadtwald , four boards were set up in the monastery area, one on Stadtwaldplatz, at the witch's baptism, on the Schillerwiese and on the buffer stop. The hiking guide for Rellinghausen / Stadtwald (Marlis Holle) was published in 2004.

Between 2004 and 2008, 5 double panels were set up in Heisingen . The hiking guide by Horst Lich and Heinrich Wacker was published in summer 2004.

In Burgaltendorf three boards were installed, the first at the Theodor colliery . The hiking guide was published in 2005 (Dieter Bonnekamp).

There was also a hiking guide for Rüttenscheid (Marlis Holle) in autumn 2004 and one for Werden in spring 2006 .

Another hiking guide was published for Steele (Marc Brandt) at the end of 2006 . The "Steeler Archive" took over the exhibition of the memorial plaques. In the summer of 2011 it set up the 6th tablet.

The hiking guide Überruhr (J. Rainer Busch and Stephan Assenmacher) was published in summer 2008

Kettwig followed in 2009 with a brochure based on the project and corresponding explanatory panels.

The youngest participant was the "Culture and History Trail " Kray and Leithe with the publication of the relevant monument guide and the inauguration of the first plaque.

Further memorial plaques are continuously being set up in all the districts involved.
