Montmarlon is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Montmarlon is located at 641 m , about 15 kilometers north of the city of Champagnole (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the Jura , on an extensive plateau on the western edge of the Forêt de la Joux, in the hollow of the Ruisseau des Joncs.
The area of the 3.28 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the formerly moored basin, which is drained by the Ruisseau des Joncs to the north to the Lizon Supérieur . With a narrow strip, the community area extends to the east over a 50 m high step into the large wooded area of the Forêt de la Joux , in which the highest elevation of Montmarlon is reached at 741 m .
Neighboring municipalities of Montmarlon are Lemuy in the north, Supt in the south and Andelot-en-Montagne in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages, Montmarlon formed its own rulership that was dependent on Montmahou. In 1639 the castle and the village were plundered and pillaged by the troops of Duke Bernhard von Sachsen-Weimar passing by . Together with Franche-Comté , Montmarlon came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

With 31 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Montmarlon is one of the smallest communities in the Jura department. Throughout the 20th century, the population always fluctuated between around 30 and 35 people.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Montmarlon was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. Even today, the residents live mainly from their work in the first sector. Outside the primary sector there are no jobs in the village. Some workers are also commuters who work in the surrounding larger towns.
The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Andelot-en-Montagne to Lemuy.
