Barretaine is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Barretaine is located 550  m above Poligny , about 20 kilometers northeast of the city of Lons-le-Saunier (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in the western part of the Plateau Lédonia (first Jura plateau), in a panoramic position high above the plains of the Saône .

The area of the 9.23 km² municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The entire area is taken up by the plain of the Plateau Lédonia, which lies at an average of 550  m and consists mainly of arable and meadow land, partly also of forest. At 591  m , the highest point in Barretaine is reached on a hill southwest of the village. The plateau has no above-ground watercourses because the rainwater seeps into the karstified subsoil. The western boundary runs above the steep drop to the flatlands of the Saône. To the north, the municipal soil extends to the upper edge of the steep slope, partly criss-crossed by rock walls, which surrounds the deeply cut valley of Vaux ( Culée de Vaux ). In the east and south-east, the community area extends to the edge of the extensive forest area of the Forêt de Poligny .

The hamlet of Champvaux ( 560  m ) on the plateau south of the Culée de Vaux belongs to Barretaine . Neighboring communities of Barretaine are Poligny , Vaux-sur-Poligny and Chaussenans in the north and east, Le Fied in the south and Plasne in the west.

history

The municipality of Barretaine was probably settled as early as Gallo-Roman times. Remains of a Roman road have been preserved. In the Middle Ages, Barretaine formed its own small rule. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The area was changed in the early 19th century: Le Ressard was incorporated into Barretaine in 1806 and Champvaux in 1821. Both localities previously formed independent communities.

Attractions

The village church of Barretaine dates from the 18th century. There is a chapel in the hamlet of Champvaux.

With 178 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Barretaine is one of the small communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (364 people were still counted in 1886), only minor fluctuations have been recorded since the beginning of the 1970s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Barretaine was a village dominated by agriculture and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Poligny to Le Fied. Another road connection exists with Plasne.
