The Vin Jaune ( French for 'yellow wine') is a wine specialty from the Jura wine-growing region , which is sold in a typical bottle. The term yellow wine is used in the German prepackaging ordinance (Appendix I) . Vin Jaune is an oxidative wine .

This wine is made exclusively from the white Savagnin grape variety . The oldest vine parcels are near the commune of Château-Chalon in France. The taste of the wine is similar to the sherry , with which it is often compared. A big difference, however, is that the Vin Jaune is not fortified .

After fermentation of the must, the wine must remain in barrique barrels for at least six years and three months . During this ripening period, up to 40% of the wine evaporates. The long maturation time also explains the high price of the wine, which is usually around 30 euros per bottle. The wine will keep for a long time after bottling. Storage times of 40 to 50 years are not uncommon.

Vin Jaune is produced under the following appellations contrôlées ( denominations of origin): Côtes du Jura , Arbois , L'Étoile and Château-Chalon . The original denomination of Château-Chalon contains only about 50 hectares spread over five neighboring municipalities: Château-Chalon, Voiteur , Menétru-le-Vignoble , Nevy-sur-Seille and Domblans . The specially shaped bottles (Clavelin) with a nominal filling quantity of 620 ml (instead of the otherwise permitted eight nominal filling quantities between 100 ml and 1500 ml) are unique in Europe and only reserved for wine from these growing areas.

From a gastronomic point of view, a Vin Jaune goes very well with cheese from the Jura, the Comté , or in general with a good cheese buffet and hearty dishes.

Since 1997, the Percée du Vin Jaune wine festival has been held on the first weekend in February . The venue changes from year to year. In 2017 the wine festival paused.
