L'Étoile (wine region)

L'Étoile is a wine-growing region within the Jura wine-growing region . Since July 31, 1937, the area has enjoyed the status of an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC for short). The area is about 5 km north of Lons-le-Saunier . In 2005 a total of 48 hectares of vineyards were planted. Around 2,320 hectoliters of white wine , Vin Jaune and Vin de Paille (i.e. straw wine) were produced. The sparkling wine produced here has been marketed under the Crémant du Jura appellation since 2001 . Therefore, the vineyard area of ​​AOC L'Étoile fell from around 78 hectares to 48 hectares.

The vineyards are distributed over the four municipalities of L'Étoile , Plainoiseau , Quintigny and Saint-Didier .

Grape varieties

Only grape varieties for white wine are permitted .

The white varieties include the Savagnin (sometimes called Naturé), which is also the only variety for the Vin Jaune . There is also the Chardonnay (this variety is sometimes locally called Melon d'Arbois or Gamay Blanc) and the red variety Poulsard .
