Château-Chalon is a wine-growing region within the Jura wine-growing region . Since May 29, 1936, the area has enjoyed the status of an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC for short). The area is about 10 km north of Lons-le-Saunier in the Jura department . In 2005 a total of 46 hectares of vineyards were planted. Approx. 1,500 hectoliters of white wine of the Vin Jaune style were produced . However, the name of Vin Jaune is not explicitly listed on the label of this wine.

The wines are bottled in a special bottle format, the 0.62 cl bottle called the Clavelin. The wine is an excellent accompaniment to Comté , a cheese specialty from the Jura.

The vineyards are distributed over the four municipalities of Château-Chalon (the eponymous municipality), Domblans , Menétru-le-Vignoble and Nevy-sur-Seille .

Grape varieties

The Savagnin grape variety (sometimes also called Naturé) is the only variety approved for the very specific white wine called Vin Jaune in the entire Jura wine-growing region. The harvest usually starts very late in order to reach the required must weight of 204 g sugar per liter. Many grape harvests therefore only begin in November; the continental climate with a dry summer ensures a healthy grape material until late autumn.
